SAUDI ARABIA: Cleric who urged grown men to drink breast milk of unrelated women taken off air
August 19, 2010 4:23 am
No more fatwas for Sheikh Abdel Mohsen Obeikan, the Saudi cleric and royal court adviser who earlier this year earned notoriety for rolling out an eyebrow-raising religious decree that called on women to give men breast milk to avoid illicit mixing.
Saudi authorities on Wednesday reportedly pulled the plug on Obeikan's radio program "Fatwas on Air," a daily morning show in which Obeikan would go on air and issue fatwas -- religious rulings -- to the public on various matters.
Taking the sheikh off air appears to come as part of Saudi king Abdullah's recent clampdown on the nation's fatwa bazaar.

Ramadan makes Muslims better Muslims
What The Sun says
Wed, 11 Aug 2010
MUSLIMS began their fasting at dawn today and will continue the daily dawn-to-dusk denial of food and drink for the whole of Ramadan. It is incumbent upon them to observe the fasting as it is one of the five pillars of their faith, Islam.
Ramadan is considered holy as it is during this month 14 centuries ago that the Quran was revealed. Thus Muslims are also encouraged to read the Quran and to contemplate its message as a reminder to them to live according to the guidance contained therein.
During this month Muslims are exhorted to lead exemplary lives, to be charitable and to observe moderation.
When it is time to break their fast at dusk they will not gorge themselves on food but instead eat and drink in moderation. Whatever is forbidden them during the day they can do at night but in moderation and within the bounds of the guidance contained in the Quran.
It is incumbent upon them to restrain themselves in their daily conduct: avoidance of cursing or losing their temper at any one, wasting, lying, cheating and backbiting.
They must avoid all kinds of temptations.
They are also exhorted to be friendly, understanding and tolerant in their dealings and relations with other human beings, be they fellow Muslims or those of other religions.

"Marriage for Minutes" in Iran
by Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury

According to Shia version of Sharia law, marrying a girl [either adult or infant] is legitimate in Iran.
Any male can marry a girl or woman in that country, which is under the cruel grips of Mullacracy for decades, simply by performing a religious ritual, which takes less than a minute.
In most cases, such ‘Marriage for Minutes’ or ‘Mut’ah Marriage’ take place to meet mere sexual desires of the men.
First of all, let us have a glimpse on the existing marriage law in Islamic Republic of Iran. In Iran, marriage law has become extremely complicated, confusing and mostly against the rights of women.

First of all, let us have a glimpse on the existing marriage law in Islamic Republic of Iran. In Iran, marriage law has become extremely complicated, confusing and mostly against the rights of women.
Let me begin with a quote from a fatwa by the late and unlamented Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran, where the readers will possibly understand the state of mind of the Islamist clergies on this particular issue:

Saudis campaign to take 4 wives
Solution to spinsterhood: Take 4 wives

JEDDAH: A group of young Saudis has strongly advocated polygamy as a way to end spinsterhood among women in the country.
They have launched a Facebook campaign called “We Want Them Four,” asking every capable Saudi man to marry four women to reduce the number of spinsters in the country.
There are no statistics on the number of unmarried women in Saudi Arabia, but their number is believed to be high due to the often-extortionate wedding costs.
“Every Saudi and Arab man who is financially and physically able to marry more than one wife should not hesitate to do so in order to end spinsterhood among our women and help cap the high marriage costs that have deterred many young men from getting married,” the campaign page says.

Polygamy for the Sake of Satisfying One's Sexual Appetite Is Allowed

Egyptian Cleric Ramadhan Labib: Polygamy for the Sake of Satisfying One's Sexual Appetite Is Allowed
http://www.memritv.org/clip/en/0/0/0/0/0/0/2578.htm
Following are excerpts from Egyptian cleric Ramadhan Labib.
Ramadhan Labib, the Islamic religious scholars have said that there are constraints on polygamy. If the wife is ill and the husband needs to satisfy his sexual appetite, or if the husband has a strong sex drive and one wife is not enough for him, he has the right to marry more wives.
Interviewer: So the religious scholars permitted polygamy to satisfy one's sex appetite, even if only for a limited period of time. A man may have a strong sex drive in his twenties and thirties, which later subsides.
Ramadhan Labib: Yes. How is he to satisfy his appetite during this period?
Interviewer: He can get married.
Ramadhan Labib: He has the right to take another wife.
Interviewer: Just to satisfy his sexual appetite?
Ramadhan Labib: Yes. Otherwise, he might satisfy this appetite in forbidden ways.
[...]
If a war breaks out in a Muslim country and many men are killed, and consequently, the women outnumber the men - then polygamy is permitted.

Outcry over Malaysian child marriages
August 2010 07:09:11 PM Source: AAPA Malaysian state's decision to allow child marriages caused an outcry on Wednesday, with rights groups condemning new rules that allow Muslim girls below 16 years to wed.
The decision by the Islamic religious council in southern Malacca state has been billed as an attempt to curb premarital sex and baby dumping, after a string of cases of newborns being abandoned.
"Child marriage amounts to paedophilia. We should not condone child marriages," said Ivy Josiah, executive director of leading activist group Women's Aid Organisation.

Malaysian Muslim women unhappy with polygamy
By Sean Yoong (CP) – Jul 22, 2010
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysian children and first wives in polygamous families overwhelmingly oppose the practice because the men seem too stretched to devote enough time and money to them, according to the country's largest study on the effects of polygamy.
Though sanctioned by Islam, polygamy is a hot-button issue for Malaysia's Muslims, who make up nearly two-thirds of the country's 28 million people. Statements made by about 1,600 members of polygamous households to university researchers appear to bolster claims by women's rights activists, who have long said the practice undermines the well-being of wives and children.
"We do not oppose polygamy, but we believe that monogamy is preferable," Adibah Jodi, a representative of Sisters in Islam, a Malaysian women's advocacy group, said Thursday.
There are no official Malaysian statistics on the number of polygamous marriages, but activists estimate they account for about 5 per cent of all new marriages every year, including ones not legally registered.

Polygamy in the Qur'an
TheReligionofPeace.com
Guide to Understanding Islam
What does the Religion of Peace Teach About...Polygamy
Question:
Does Islam really allow a man to take up to four wives?
Summary Answer:
Yes, a Muslim man can marry as man as four women, and have sexual relations with an unspecified number of slaves as well. Muhammad had eleven wives at one time.
The Qur'an:
Qur'an (4:3) - "Marry of the women, who seem good to you, two or three or four; and if ye fear that ye cannot do justice (to so many) then one (only) or (the captives) that your right hands possess."
Qur'an (4:129) - "Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women, even if it is your ardent desire" (but don't let that stop you, husbands, because your needs come first anyway).
Qur'an (66:5) - "Maybe, his Lord, if he divorce you, will give him in your place wives better than you, submissive, faithful, obedient, penitent, adorers, fasters, widows and virgins" A disobedient wife can be replaced. A man can only have up to four wives, but he can rotate as many women as he pleases in and out of the lineup.

The Iranian woman whose sentence of death by stoning was commuted to hanging after an international campaign, today sent a message from inside Tabriz prison calling for further support so that she might be reunited with her children.
Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two, said she thinks of nothing other than hugging her children and that she was mentally broken when authorities flogged her 99 times in front of her then 17-year-old son, Sajad.
She thanked the world for launching the campaign for her release but said part of her "heart is frozen". "Every night before I go to sleep, I think who would throw stones at me?", she said.
The message was read by Mina Ahadi, of the Iran Committee against Stoning (ICAS), at a press conference in Conway Hall, in London, this morning .

Campaign for Iranian woman facing death by stoning

A 43-year-old Iranian woman is facing death by stoning unless an international campaign launched by her children forces the authorities to quash what her lawyer calls a bogus conviction.
In a case that highlights the growing use of the death penalty in a country that has already executed more than 100 people this year, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was convicted in May 2006 of conducting an "illicit relationship outside marriage."
Sakineh already endured a sentence of 99 lashes, but her case was re-opened when a court in Tabriz suspected her of murdering her husband. She was acquitted, but the adultery charge was reviewed and a death penalty handed down on the basis of "judge's knowledge" – a loophole that allows for subjective judicial rulings where no conclusive evidence is present.

Malaysia Home minister say regrets ‘Allah’ ban
By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said today that his predecessor should not have banned the word “Allah” from being used by the Catholic Church.
The decision, he added, will continue to haunt his ministry “for a very long time.”
“In this ministry, it is a zero-sum game. We are [now] in an uncharted landscape which will haunt us for a very long time.
“We should have let the sleeping dogs lie. It was triggered by those that believed that the word ‘Allah’ should not be used in Sabah and Sarawak,” he said during the Fourth Annual Malaysian Student Leaders Summit here.

Say NO to Mosque at Ground Zero
DEMONSTRATORS SAY "NO" TO MOSQUE AT GROUND ZERO
"No mosque at Ground Zero" was the rallying cry of the day, as thousands of angry demonstrators gathered for a rally to oppose the proposed construction of a 13-story mosque just blocks away from the site of the 9/11 attacks. A palpable patriotism and zeal filled the air on Sunday afternoon, June 6th as Zucotti Park at the corner of Church and Liberty Streets in lower Manhattan was filled to capacity. Rally attendees who came from as far as Chicago and Los Angeles held signs saying, "Ground Zero is a War Memorial - No Mega Mosque here", "You Can Build a Mosque at Ground Zero - When Can We Build a Synagogue in Mecca?", "Pack Your Sharia and Get out", "Mayor Bloomberg: This Mosque Has Radical Ties - and you still approve?" Hundreds of American flags blew in the summer breeze as speakers representing every walk of life condemned the notion of a mosque being erected near the site of the former World Trade Center's twin towers.
The Cordoba Initiative, headed by Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, is the chief sponsor of the project that is to be called The Cordoba House, a name that refers to the city in Spain which, in the Middle Ages, was a center of Islamic culture and learning. Cordoba was also the seat of an Islamic caliphate in which Jews and Christians suffered under second-class dhimmi status and was the site of large-scale pogrom, perpetrated by Muslims, in the year 1011.
